Many of the old school white collar corporate people are not yet believers in the teambuilding concept.  This is a shame because the newer more open minded companies are constantly developing new procedures and tactics to grow their business and increase their profits.  These companies that are utilizing teambuilding activities and exercises are growing leaps and bounds and making more money than before.  In business if you are not moving forward then you are being left behind.  These days corporate business is changing drastically and quickly and for a company to be successful they have to be able to adapt and overcome the necessary changes.  The successful company's are the ones that do this correctly.  Teambuilding allows the members of a team to learn what is expected of them and their fellow members and why it is important and how it fits into the grand scheme of things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trade secrets are very important to a company but other than things like that secrecy is not a good thing.  The more the team members know about their influence on the company instead of just how the company affects them.  Perhaps the most important aspect of teambuilding is that you learn what you and others do in certain situations and how it fits with what you should do or how you should act in those situations.  Teambuilding types of activities allow a person to try new things and learn about themselves without any real consequences.  This is great because many people do not try new things, wise or not, out of fear that a mistake will reflect badly on them or drag the company down.  Using teambuilding exercises a group can test out new methods of doing things.  If they make a bad decision during teambuilding it causes no harm and you start over.  It is more likely that you will go out on a limb and try a new thing during teambuilding and discover that the new way is more efficient and effective and there was no risk involved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I not only benefited from all of the teambuilding I was involved in but I had a lot of fun in the process.  Teambuilding allowed me to learn about myself and others.  I discovered so many wonderful things about my fellow team members and have built strong friendships that are based on qualities that I learned during teambuilding and would not have ever discovered without the use of teambuilding,  I owe these excellent friendships to the company I work for and the forward thinking they possess.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have never had the chance to participate in any teambuilding activities then I highly recommend that you check out the teambuilding things that your company has in their human resources department.  If there is no teambuilding available to you right off the bat go ahead and take the initiative and research the companies that develop and customize teambuilding programs for companies like yours. Once you find the type of teambuilding you think would help your department or company as a whole present it to your management.  I am sure that if you present the ideas to your fellow employees they will be more than happy to help you look into the teambuilding things since they will be a part of it as well and would likely want the input into the teambuilding they will be required to participate in.  The more people involved in the teambuilding process the better off everyone involved will be and the stronger the company will be as a result.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Teambuilding has been a huge part of the best companies in the world so why not take the hint and get with the program and hop on the teambuilding bandwagon so that your company is not left in the dust. The activities that our company has been using are ones from many years ago.  Though the team building exercises we have are very good and highly effective I was lucky enough to be sent by my company to a team building workshop.  I am proud to say that I have learned a lot about team building lately and was looking around for team building ideas on the internet and found a team building workshop that was set to happen a couple of states over from my home state of Colorado.  I went to my manager and presented the idea of sending a company manager to this team building workshop to gain a bit more insight into team building activities and exercises.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My manager thought it was a great idea to send someone but did not tell me that he was thinking he wanted to send me.  My manager told the CEO about the team building workshop in Washington State.  Later that day John came back to me and let me know the CEP loved the idea of sending a company representative to the upcoming team building workshop.  Not only did the CEO want to send someone to participate in the team building workshop but he wanted it to be me since I had the idea in the first place.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What an honor it was to be sent to represent my company at the Washington team building workshop.  I have never been sent out of town on business before so that was pretty exciting in and of itself. My bosses are always talking about how much fun their out of town business trips are.  First of all my company sent me to the team building workshop first class air.  First class is the coolest place I have ever been.  You can have all of the drinks for free and the meals are great.  It is unfortunate that the team building workshop was not further away since I could have sat in my leather airline seat for ever and never gotten uncomfortable or bored.  I landed in Seattle the day before the team building workshop so I had a lot of time to spend sightseeing.  Seattle is a great city and I would never have gotten to see it if it wasn't for the team building workshop there.  After the workshop I had another spare day to kick around Seattle and see what was there before hopping back into my first class seat to go home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The main reason for my story is the team building workshop that I attended.  I learned so much about how person to person interactions work.  Up until then I had been on the receiving end of the team building exercises and not really in the planning part.  I was able to hear speakers talk about how they develop teambuilding programs from the ground up and how they use the team building workshops to learn and test the newer training concepts they develop between workshops.  I was able to play some role playing games and leadership games at this workshop and really see how other companies do their teambuilding.  I had the chance to meet dozens of people from all sorts of different companies from electronic companies with hundreds of employees to large companies with ten thousand employees.  It seems that no matter how large the company is the teambuilding concepts are the same.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On the second day of the team building workshop we went into the development phase of the workshop.  The instructors had so much great stuff to say and a lot of excellent suggestions for how we could conduct our own internal team building workshop within our company.  I took a ton of notes and recorded all of the guest speakers so that I could brief the CEO and the rest of the management team when I got back home. It happens that the team building workshop was a blast but it was a lot of work while I was there and when I returned home.  It was all worth it and since then I have gotten to arrange and execute a division and section team building workshop for my own company. I recently got offered a promotion and got a glimpse of the paperwork that my immediate supervisor put into corporate.  The main factor for this promotion was my hard work and dedication to the team building workshops and teambuilding in general.  Guess what my new job is?  I will be the Teambuilding Manager and team building workshop Liaison.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All it takes is a little thinking and a lot of desire and anything can be accomplished.  The funny thing is that I was just curious about team building workshops and stumbled across one close by and because of that I am a Manager and a team building workshop liaison now. My manager came to me and told me that we were going to try to strengthen the teams in our department.  Normally we try to strengthen the group by having a picnic and going to the movies or playing a softball game.  In my opinion these activities did improve morale but since we started using a number of different team building activities my ideas of what team building and morale building has changed.  The games we used to play and the activities we used to take part in were nothing more than a break from the daily grind of our jobs.  True team building activities work wonders and do more than just allow the employees some time to relax and chat about meaningless things.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The team building activities that we have been taking part in have helped to instill the company's values in our mind by allowing us to learn more about how things should operate and how we should be acting around others in a number of different situations.  We played this role playing team building activity that allowed me to switch places with my manager so I could see what types of situations he has to deal with everyday and how he has to react.  I thought I know what my manager did everyday based off of the few minutes per day he is around me and interacting with other managers and employees. I did not know the half of it. My manager is put into so many situations that require a lot of quick thinking and decision making ability.  I now have a new found respect for what my manager does everyday because of the team building activities we tired and would not have ever known about that stuff without the team building activities until I made it to his position.  By the time I reach his spot the knowledge is not as useful to the company.  The team building activities showed me things that I need to understand in order to be a better employee and follower.  My better actions will help the management get their job done and the company to make the profits we need to stay employed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people that I have spoken to have never taken part in any team building activities at their place of business.  I told them that they must get with their human resources department to find out if they have any team building activities that can be used. If there are not already approved team building activities available to be used then the employees should band together and get with the management and propose the idea.  If the employees do the research and are able to display the benefits of the team building activities on the market and why the money would be well spent.  The truth is that the majority of the team building activities we tried are great but some of them were not so useful.  I got together with my fellow employees and we figured out which ones of the team building activities were great and which ones were not great and detailed explanations of why we felt that way.  The managers were very impressed with how we presented ourselves and how clearly we expressed our thoughts.  This made them understand what helped us and the company and decided the following week to discard the useless team building activities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The team building activities are there for the employees to grow and therefore strengthen the company.  The employee's opinion is very important because if you force a group of team building activities on people that either do not benefit from the activity or do not want to participate in the specific activity it is instantly useless.  From what I have seen, the company's that use team building activities are forward thinking enough to care which ones of the team building activities are the most effective. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The team building activities are for the employees and the management so it should be viewed as such.  I am a huge fan of many of the wonderful team building activities and programs available for purchase and customization.  Check into them and you will find that they are well worth their weight in gold. I have had the chance to participate in a whole assortment of types of team building exercises.  I have been the leader in many of these exercises and the follower in many of them.  The great thing about using these exercises is that it allows the leaders and followers to switch places and roles to have the chance to be in the other person's shoes without affecting the company or how it runs.  It gives the people a no consequence opportunity to try things out and see how the other half works.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some team building exercises are role play types of games.  Learning how individuals react or make decisions in specific situations is the key to preventing future problems.  That is why I applaud the individuals that have the foresight and inventiveness to create the abundance of team building exercises on the market.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I personally learned a ton of things about myself and how I work in various situations during the team building exercises.  I got the opportunity to test out various leadership techniques without the fear of messing anything important up. The thing is that no matter how hard I would have tried, without the tools I used I could not have been a beneficial part of the teams and therefore the team would not have grown in strength or quality.  The teams that I have been a part of were the United States Army and a top 100 company that I will not name for personal reasons.  The tools I am speaking of, that I owe all of my best efforts to, are team building activities and team building exercises.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many of you who are unfamiliar with the concept of team building exercises may not really understand the value they have and the benefit they bring.  I have actually heard a non-believer call team building exercises a bunch of goofy corporate games meant to waste company money and get employees out of doing work.  I have to say they were in essence games and yes they did get us out of our normal jobs for a window of time but that is not where it ends.  These team building exercises allowed the group to become more than a bunch of people with similar or interrelated jobs, but actually become a team that is capable of complex multi part tasks that most groups cannot accomplish.  Not only can the team building exercises enable the groups to accomplish otherwise impossible tasks, but the team can accomplish the task faster and more efficiently than they could otherwise do.  It is that outcome that makes the team building exercises available today such a great concept in plan and execution.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had good fortune of bringing some of the team building exercises that I learned in the United States military to the corporate world.  In my opinion the best team building exercises in the world are developed by the military.  The reason for this is that the military is not just happy about having excellent working teams but needs them to survive.  Team building exercises allow soldiers to develop the confidence and trust in their fellow teammates which are essential to combat operations when lives are at stake and the only thing between life and death is the teammate that stands to the left and right of you. I will state that the type of team building exercises that we did in the service and the corporate world are similar in concept but not execution.  The principles that allow teams to get closer and work better are the same no matter where the team resides or the task the team undertakes but the actual steps in the team building exercises are vastly different.  An example of how the team building exercises are in the service are that they consist a lot of yelling and screaming along with physical stress and emotional stress in great quantities.  In the corporate world the team building exercises cannot take that form since there would be a lot of lawsuits and unhappy employees running around.  The other thing is that the team building exercises do not require that the participants are put in life and death stress situations as they are in the military.  For this reason and others the team building exercises that corporate places borrow from the Army are tweaked to fit the need of the company and the team it is being designed for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have had the chance to be a part of the organized team building exercises of the corporate world or the military then you know what I am speaking of and if not you may still think they are bogus.  I have done a bunch of research in this area and have found that the most successful companies in history have been successful because of the team building exercises they used and honed to fit their need. If team building exercises can work for companies that have a host of departments and thousands of employees then there is no reason that team building exercises will not work for you in the company you are in.  If you work for a large company then it is likely that the human resources area has information on team building exercises already and if you work for a company that does not you may want to research the companies that exist to help develop team building exercises for various types of businesses and customize ones to fit the exact need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Team building exercises are not only a great motivator for employees but benefit the company in other ways.  The money spent to develop and implement the necessary team building exercises will be received back ten fold or more with the results they bring about.  If you do not use team building exercises, start doing so and if you already utilize team building exercises continue using them and learn how to improve the ones you use.  If you are not going forward in business then you are falling behind.  Do not get left behind, push forward with efficient and effective team building exercises.
